Federal-Provincial-Territorial Ministers of Agriculture:  Readout of Virtual Meeting

Today, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, and the Member of Parliament for Hochelaga, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, announced over $2.5 million for 30 projects with local not-for-profit organizations in the Montreal area. These investments, through the Local Food Infrastructure Fund, will support projects that facilitate access to safe and nutritious food for at-risk populations and strengthen the local food system.Today, Canada’s Ministers of Agriculture met by video conference to discuss several key areas of interest for Canada’s agriculture sector, as a lead-up to their Annual Conference in September.

Canada and British Columbia invest in local infrastructure to help build community connections in the Okanagan-Kootenay Region

Today, Andy Fillmore, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Josie Osborne, British Columbia’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, announced funding for 27 local infrastructure projects in the Okanagan-Kootenay Region. They were accompanied by Roly Russell, British Columbia’s Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development and Member of Legislative Assembly for Boundary-Similkameen, Mike Allison, Councillor of the Upper Similkameen Indian Band, Her Worship Suzan Hewat, Mayor of Kaslo, and Sadie Hunter, Kamloops City Councillor.

Backgrounder: Canada and British Columbia invest in local infrastructure to help build community connections in the Okanagan-Kootenay Region

Funding through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan will support 27 infrastructure projects in the Okanagan-Kootenay Region. The Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia are investing over $24.5 million in these projects through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s new COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream. Canada is contributing over $20.8 million, while B.C. is contributing almost $3.7 million. Federal and provincial funding is conditional on fulfilling all requirements related to consultation with Indigenous groups.

The Government of Canada supports Dene Nation initiative to help conserve boreal caribou

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, today announced that the Government of Canada will invest $1,080,000 over two years in the Western Boreal Initiative with the Dene Nation. The Western Boreal Initiative is a collaboration between provinces, territories, and First Nations governments to evaluate the cumulative effects of wildfire, predation, key pests, human disturbances, and climate change on the Western Boreal Forests of Canada.

Government of Canada invests in the next generation of world-class scientists

Today, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Ali Ehsassi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced the recipients of 166 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships and 70 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships. These talented doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers are part of Canada’s next generation of research leaders, spanning the health sciences, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities. These awards represent a total investment of $39.6 million over three years from the Government of Canada.
