The most recent projections estimate that about 700,000 skilled trades workers are expected to retire between 2019 and 2028, creating an ever-growing need to recruit and train thousands more. Backgrounder: Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP)

The Union Training and Innovation Program provides $25M annually to support union-based apprenticeship training, innovation and enhanced partnerships in the Red Seal trades. It has two streams of funding. Stream 1, Investments in Training Equipment, provides unions with up to 50% of the cost of new, up-to-date equipment and materials that meet industry standards or investments in new technology in the Red Seal trades. Stream 2, Innovation in Apprenticeship, provides support for innovative approaches and enhanced partnerships to address long-standing challenges limiting apprenticeship outcomes in Canada.

Canada announces over $73 million in funding to respond to drought in Horn of Africa

Canada is extremely concerned by the drought in the Horn of Africa and its impact on vulnerable populations already struggling as a result of poverty, insecurity and the COVID-19 pandemic. Severe drought conditions in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia could result in over 20 million people across the region needing emergency food assistance in 2022, which would be a 70% increase when compared to the severe drought in 2016 and 2017.
