Remarks by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance concerning Russia’s further invasion of Ukraine

Let me begin by unequivocally condemning Russia’s further invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s actions are a violation of international law and of the rules-based international order. This is an attempt to replace that rules-based international order with a world in which might makes right, where the great powers have the authority to redraw the borders, dictate the foreign policies, and control the governments of sovereign democracies whose only fault is that they are smaller and that their militaries are not as powerful.

Today, on Canada’s Agriculture Day, I am proud to join Canadians in celebrating the incredible high-quality and nutritious foods produced in Canada, and in thanking the hard working men and women who bring them from the farm to our plates. While food is a necessity for our health and well-being, it can also be a source of joy for families and friends gathering to share a meal.

Several Provincial Court cases in the last two years highlight the potential costs, both financial and legal, of obstructing fishery officers. Conservation and Protection officers from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) have a wide range of powers to enforce the rules and regulations set out in Canada’s Fisheries Act.
