Government of Canada legislates climate accountability with first net-zero emissions law

Yesterday, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, welcomed Royal Assent of the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, which has become law. It marks the first time a Canadian government has legislated emissions reductions accountability to address climate change, by setting legal requirements on the current government and future governments to plan, report, and course correct on the path to net-zero emissions by or before 2050.

The path to reconciliation requires a true partnership between Canada and First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation when it comes to decisions about Canada’s marine environment. The Government of Canada, in cooperation with Indigenous Peoples, is taking concrete measures to address the complex range of threats that contribute to the endangerment of marine mammals, including addressing increased noise levels from nearby ships. This important partnership with Indigenous communities in British Columbia is one based on traditional knowledge sharing, science and inclusive engagement.

Canada and Nova Scotia invest in renewable energy infrastructure for the Cogswell Redevelopment Area
