Today, the Honourable David McGuinty, Minister of National Defence and the Philippine Secretary of National Defense, Gilberto Teodoro, signed a Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA) between Canada and the Philippines. This agreement builds on the Canada-Philippines Defence Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding signed in January 2024.

Today, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, met with Japan’s State Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Yamada Kenji at the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Toronto, Ontario. They released the Joint Statement on Cooperation in the Energy Resources Sector, which signals their mutual commitment in the sector, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), nuclear power and the battery value chain.

On October 31 and November 1, the Honourable Julie Dabrusin, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, hosted the 9th Ministerial on Climate Action (MoCA9) in Toronto, Ontario, where ministers and key partners gathered to advance discussion on climate action ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) taking place in Belém, Brazil, later this month.

As the world confronts evolving energy challenges shaped by geopolitical pressures, climate change and technological disruption, Canada will continue to work with G7 partners and other allies to reinforce prosperity, security and sustainability for citizens around the world.

Building on commitments to enhance energy security made during the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, G7 Energy Ministers noted the importance of securing energy sources and critical mineral materials and of strengthening collaboration to improve the stability, resilience and flexibility of energy systems to meet demand and mitigate these risks.

Today, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, met with Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svitlana Grynchuk, at the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Toronto, Ontario. Minister Hodgson reaffirmed Canada’s longstanding commitment to Ukraine’s energy security, with Minister Grynchuk expressing gratitude for Canada’s support. We have a shared ambition that AI data centers be reliably and cost-effectively powered through the adoption of technical and market-based solutions, such as optimizing the resource management and demand-side response related to the energy requirements of AI and data centres, in a manner consistent with domestic priorities and applicable international commitments.

Tallinn Mechanism Members Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States together with observers Czechia, the European Union, NATO and the World Bank, gathered in Paris on October 30-31st.
