Newcomers have played an essential role in addressing some of our most severe labour shortages throughout the pandemic, including on the front lines. However, there remain challenges, including processing delays that have led to frustrations for those trying to come to Canada to work or reunite with their families. While Canada welcomed the highest number of permanent residents in a single year in 2021 by processing a record number of applications, border restrictions and other pandemic-related factors have led to delays for many applicants, and long waits for application updates. We know these need to be addressed.

As we reach the 1-year anniversary of the coup in Myanmar, the country’s political and humanitarian situation continues to have significant impacts on the most vulnerable throughout the entire region and remains a threat to international peace and security.
Assault of inmates at Springhill Institution
On January 25, 2022, at approximately 6:00 p.m., two inmates were assaulted at Springhill Institution, a medium-security federal institution. The injured inmates were evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment. One of the inmates has since returned to the institution, while the other inmate remains in hospital.
