Health Canada authorizes more flexible storage conditions for Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine

On May 19, 2021, Health Canada authorized a submission from Pfizer-BioNTech to allow its COVID-19 vaccine to be stored at regular refrigerated temperatures (2-8°C) at the point of use for up to one month. The vaccine was first authorized with a recommended storage temperature of between -80°C to -60°C (-112°F to -76°F). Thawed undiluted vials could only be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. On March 3, 2021, Health Canada authorized a change to enable storage at -25°C to -15°C (13°F to 5°F) for up to 2 weeks. This latest change will support additional flexibility in vaccine distribution.

Government of Canada and Ahousaht First Nation partnering on new response vessel to strengthen marine safety in British Columbia

As part of the Canadian Coast Guard’s Indigenous Community Boat Volunteer Pilot Program, Ahousaht First Nation has received and launched its new dedicated response vessel. As a founding member of the Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary (CN-CGA), Ahousaht First Nation works and trains with the Canadian Coast Guard and other first responders to support marine safety on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

British Columbia-based trading company fined $60,000 for illegal import of 434 kg of fins from a threatened shark species

On May 18, 2021, Kiu Yick Trading Co. Ltd. was sentenced to pay a $60,000 fine after pleading guilty in the Provincial Court of British Columbia to unlawfully importing a CITES-listed species without a permit, in contravention of subsection 6(2) of the Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act. The fine will be directed to the Government of Canada’s Environmental Damages Fund and used to support projects that benefit our natural environment. In addition to the fine, the court also ordered that 13 boxes of silky shark fins, weighing approximately 434 kg, be forfeited to the Crown.
