Minister of Transport approves new projects to address abandoned boats across Canada

Today, the Minister of Transport, the Honourable Omar Alghabra, announced the most recent initiatives to receive funding for the assessment, removal and disposal of abandoned boats in Canadian waters. Under the Abandoned Boats Program, $1,692,079 is being provided to assess 44 boat removal projects in British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador, and to remove 51 abandoned boats in British Columbia and Nova Scotia.

Through Transport Canada’s Abandoned Boats Program and Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours Abandoned and Wrecked Vessels Removal Program, the Government of Canada is helping to remove abandoned boats, educate boat owners about their responsibilities, and support research into improving recycling options.

Three new backbone networks improve Internet access for 700 households in Charlevoix

Thanks to a combined investment of close to $1.5 million from the Government of Canada, the Government of Quebec and Bell, 700 households in several communities in the Charlevoix region now have better access to high-speed Internet. Completion of the construction of fibre-optic backbone networks means that the communities of Maillard, Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, Cap-Aux-Corbeaux, Baie-Saint-Paul, Jean-Noël and La Malbaie can now benefit from quality Internet service at a reasonable price. These three infrastructure projects were carried out as part of a large intergovernmental initiative to provide connectivity to up to 24,000 households in 58 rural communities in Quebec.
