Government of Canada invests $53 million to address COVID-19 virus variants of concern

To help detect and track new variants of concern in Canada, the Government of Canada developed a monitoring program with provinces and territories to identify new COVID-19 virus variants in Canada, such as the ones originating in the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7), South Africa (B.1.351) and Brazil (P.1). Today, the Government of Canada is increasing our capacity to find and track these variants in Canada by investing $53 million in an integrated Variants of Concern Strategy, which will rapidly scale up our surveillance, sequencing and research efforts.

Government of Canada invests to address labour needs of Northeastern Ontario businesses

Paul Lefebvre, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, and Marc G. Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, today announced a Government of Canada investment of $95,000 to help the Northern Policy Institute to attract newcomers to the region and connect them with workplaces in need of their skills. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for FedNor. This strategic project is engaging multiple stakeholders, communities and businesses across Northeastern Ontario to implement a plan to address challenges such as labour shortages, outmigration and an aging population that affect economic development in the region.

Major investment in the rehabilitation of Forestville’s port facilities

The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, and Chantal Rouleau, Minister responsible for Transport Quebec, highlighted their commitment to rehabilitate the Port of Forestville. Midway between Quebec City and Sept-Îles, the Port enables the transportation of goods throughout the region and offers a seasonal ferry service between the south shore and the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River.

Canada welcomed 184,000 new immigrants in 2020
