Canada and FCM invest in asset management in British Columbia communities

The Government of Canada is investing $693,626 in 15 new projects in British Columbia communities through the Municipal Asset Management Program (MAMP), delivered by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities on behalf of the federal government. The program helps municipalities strengthen local infrastructure planning and decision-making by increasing local asset management capacity through investments in activities such as asset management training, technology and software enhancements and information sharing.

Government of Canada invests millions into mental health and distress centres

Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health, announced an investment of $9,275,000 in 57 distress centres in Canada through the Public Health Agency of Canada. This investment will support a range of distress centres across the country, including in rural and remote areas. It will also support centres that provide crisis support for specific populations—including seniors, Indigenous communities, LGBTQ2 populations and racially and linguistically diverse communities. Project funding will support recruitment, training, operating costs, and knowledge exchanges.

Minister Fortier and Minister Romano announce over $1.3M in Northern Ontario communities to support a strong and inclusive recovery from the pandemic

Today, the Minister of Middle-Class Prosperity and Associate Minister of Finance, the Honourable Mona Fortier, MPP for Sault Ste. Marie, the Honourable Ross Romano, and the Mayors of Timmins, Kenora, Cochrane, Kapuskasing, Hearst, and Black River-Matheson announced joint funding for 9 local projects in the Districts of Algoma, Cochrane, Kenora, and Timiskaming in Northern Ontario. These projects are designed to help communities install COVID-19 safety measures throughout communities and improve active transportation options.

Government of Canada releases Policy Statement on future thermal coal mining projects and project expansions

As G7 world leaders gather in the U.K. to combat global challenges, including climate change, and as the next step in Canada’s commitment to addressing harmful GHG emissions from coal, the Honorable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, today announced the Government of Canada’s public policy statement on new thermal coal mining or expansion projects. The statement indicates that the Government considers that these projects are likely to cause unacceptable environmental effects within federal jurisdiction and are not aligned with Canada’s domestic and international climate change commitments. Accordingly, this position will inform federal decision making on thermal coal mining projects.
