Government of Canada Announces Funding for COVID-19 Safe Voluntary Isolation Sites in Barrie, Ontario

Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health, announced $731,810 in funding to the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit to operate safe voluntary isolation sites in Barrie and the surrounding communities. These sites help those who have COVID-19, or have been exposed to it, access safe isolation accommodations to keep themselves and their community safe.

Canada and Ontario invest in upgrades for the accessible community pool at The Safehaven Project for Community Living 

Today, Julie Dzerowicz, Member of Parliament for Davenport, on behalf of the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; Christine Hogarth, Parliamentary Assistant to the Solicitor General and Member of Provincial Parliament for Etobicoke–Lakeshore, on behalf of the Honourable Laurie Scott, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure; and Susan Bisaillon, Chief Executive Officer of The Safehaven Project for Community Living announced joint funding for upgrades for the accessible community pool at The Safehaven Project for Community Living.

Government of Canada builds on success under the Ghost Gear Fund with second call for proposals

Lost, abandoned and discarded fishing gear, or ‘ghost gear,’ is one of the largest causes of marine pollution. Canada has made great strides in tackling this problem, both at home and abroad, through the Ghost Gear Fund (Sustainable Fisheries Solutions and Retrieval Support Contribution Program). In 2020, the Ghost Gear Fund helped remove 63 tonnes of ghost gear from Canadian waters, thereby reducing threats to vulnerable fish stocks, marine mammals and vital ecosystems.

Canada and FCM invest in asset management in Ontario communities

The Government of Canada is investing over $1.6 million in 39 new projects in Ontario communities through the Municipal Asset Management Program (MAMP), delivered by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities on behalf of the federal government. The program helps municipalities strengthen local infrastructure planning and decision-making by increasing local asset management capacity through investments in activities such as asset management training, technology and software enhancements and information sharing.

Government of Canada invests $2.8 million to help prevent human trafficking and support survivors and victims in British Columbia

Human trafficking is an unconscionable crime that impacts the most vulnerable in Canada and around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it even more difficult to keep people safe, and help victims escape situations of human trafficking and access the supports they need. Indigenous women and girls, newcomers to Canada, Black and racialized women and those living in poverty are particularly at-risk of being trafficked.

Supporting projects to help address harms related to alcohol use in Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador

The Government of Canada continues to support communities across Canada as they work to respond to increasing levels of substance use-related harms during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes nearly $2 million in funding over two years for three community-based projects, provided through Health Canada’s Substance Use and Addictions Program, to address alcohol-related harms.
