CRTC sets final wholesale rates for broadband services

Today, the CRTC set the final rates to access the large companies’ high-speed broadband networks and resolved a long-standing dispute with respect to the existing wholesale model. This will enable the industry to move towards a new wholesale model that will increase competition and investments. This new model is intended to provide Canadians with more choice, better prices and innovative services.

In 2015, the CRTC concluded that sustainable competition was required for access to the large companies’ high-speed broadband networks. To achieve this goal, the CRTC decided that the large companies should also be required to give competitors access to their fibre-to-the-home networks under a wholesale model known as disaggregated high-speed access (HSA) service.

Canada and Ontario mark 50th anniversary of Great Lakes Agreement by signing ninth agreement

Today, the Governments of Canada and Ontario announced that they have signed the new Canada-Ontario Agreement on Great Lakes Water Quality and Ecosystem Health , which sets out specific actions each government will take to protect and restore the Great Lakes, such as preventing toxic and nuisance algae, improving wastewater and stormwater management, reducing plastic pollution and excess road salt, restoring native species and habitats, and increasing resilience to climate change.

Government of Canada invests to accelerate business development and growth, and create up to 60 jobs throughout the Greater Sudbury region

Paul Lefebvre, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, and Marc G. Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, today announced a FedNor investment of $631,920 to help the City of Greater Sudbury establish a business incubator to enable high-growth and innovative firms to start-up, scale-up and create high-quality jobs. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for FedNor.

G7 statement on Belarus

We, the G7 foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, and the High Representative of the European Union condemn in the strongest terms the unprecedented action by the Belarusian authorities in arresting independent journalist, Raman Pratasevich and his companion, Sofia Sopega, after forcing Flight FR4978 on which they were travelling to land in Minsk on 23 May.

Minister Schulte to make announcement about high-speed Internet projects in Vaughan and East Gwillimbury

The Honourable Deb Schulte, Minister of Seniors and Member of Parliament for King–Vaughan, on behalf of the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, will announce investments in high-speed Internet that will impact the York Region communities of Vaughan and East Gwillimbury. Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson, a local resident and a representative of the partnering Internet service provider will join Minister Schulte.
