Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador invest in drinking water and wastewater infrastructure to protect public health and the environment

Canada extends travel ban from India and Pakistan

Canada has extended the travel ban for all direct passenger and business flights from India and Pakistan for another 30 days, until June 21, 2021. The travel ban first went into place on April 22 for 30 days, until May 22. Cargo flights carrying vaccines and protective equipment will continue to be allowed into Canada. Government of Canada announces senior advisor to Global Affairs Canada on Flight PS752 tragedy

Today, the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that Payam Akhavan, Senior Fellow at Massey College and distinguished visiting professor at the University of Toronto, will join Global Affairs Canada (GAC) as a senior advisor on the department’s ongoing response to the Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 tragedy. This appointment concludes a months-long search to best support the expertise and capacity of the department on this critical file.

Canada to return pollution pricing proceeds to New Brunswick

As a result of New Brunswick’s April 2020 action to put in place a price on pollution that meets the federal benchmark, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, announced that she is specifying the Minister of National Revenue return $5.05 million directly to the Government of New Brunswick. These funds are from revenue collected through the federal backstop in 2019-2020, prior to the provincial system being stood up.

Government of Canada to help schools, hospitals, and businesses take climate action

To address delays in disbursement caused by COVID-19, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, has authorized a one-year extension for the Minister of Natural Resources to disburse 2019-20 federal price on pollution proceeds in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and New Brunswick. The Minister of Natural Resources now has until the end of the 2021-22 fiscal year to invest in eligible energy efficiency projects at schools, hospitals, small- and medium-sized businesses, colleges, universities, municipalities, not-for-profit organizations, or in Indigenous communities in those provinces.
